CHARLOTTE CHOIR NEWS
A fun and memorable time was had by all choir members who attended the 40th annual conference of the Southeastern Federation of Greek Orthodox Choirs and Musicians (SFGOCM) hosted by St. Mark's in Boca Raton, FL on July 28-31. The 'Liturgy of Peace' was sung which was beautifully conducted by the composer himself, Chris Kypros. Guest organist was Jim Bostaph, organist at St. Constantine & Helen in Newport News, VA and Youth Conductor, Stacey Norton, director at Holy Trinity in Orlando, FL. Father Steven Klund, who grew up in Charlotte, now serves the host community of St. Mark in Boca Raton, was also part of the conference's clergy.
The conference consisted of a 116-voice choir which included 30 youth and teen choir musicians. Of those voices, 12 adults and 2 youth/teen were from our very own HTC! HTC choir members who participated included Dr. Philip Thevaos, Lucy Pappadakes, Irina Monzolevskaya, Olga Yamalis, Dean Johns, Pauline Velonis, Niki Vastis, Sarah Vastis, Ekaterini Kapantais, Cecelia Kotsipias, Irene Yamalis and Elaina Yamalis. Former HTC choir members re-uniting included Chris Johns, Alex Johns, Suzanne Velonis, Dr. Bessie Chronaki, Irene Chronaki and Donna Palios Trakas.
On a fun note for this conference, our very own HTC bus was utilized to its fullest capacity. First, the name of the bus changed to the "Do Re Mi So Fun" bus. It was occupied by the "La-ti-da" ladies choir members who were chauffeured solely by our very own HTC Choir Director, Lucy Pappadakes. The bus trip fully incorporated several conference music practices, Greek pastry eating, Greek instrumental music, pop-up thunderstorms, and shared choir member jokes for all 1450+ miles. What an absolutely pleasurable trip!!
Congratulations is also in order to our very own Dean Johns from our Bass section. He was this year's recipient in our Metropolis to receive the Patriarch Athenagoras I Award. This award gives national recognition to individuals whose contributions to the music ministry of the church are worthy of distinction. It recognizes their talents and service to the development and perpetuation of the church choirs and musicians in their Metropolis and local community. Dean's over 40+years of choir service contributions along with his many years chairing the Federation's Scholarship 100 Committee surely confirmed this honor. Congratulations Dean!
Congratulations also goes out to Dr. Philip Thevaos for being elected again as the Southeastern Federation President for the next year 2016-2017.
Another Congratulations goes out to Lucy Pappadakes for being selected as Guest Conductor in the Metropolis of Boston Federation's Choir Conference to be held in New London, CT in October 2016. Way to go Lucy, we are so proud of you!
Our summer closes out with August/September practices in preparation for our Saturday choir performances at our 2016 Yiasou Festival directed by Dr. Philip Thevaos. Future Southeastern Federation events include participation November 12 & 13 in Atlanta for the Archangel Michael Awards and next year's 41st SFGOCM annual choir conference combined with Metropolis Clergy Laity Assembly June 21-24, 2017 in Raleigh, NC.

Dear Fellow Church Musicians,
Christos Anesti !!
Welcome to the newest version of KEYNOTES ‼
Our hope is that this new website, which is accessible through both email and social media, will enable us all to keep in touch with each other across our Metropolis. Leon Karahalis and Chris Johns, our editors, have both the artistic creativity and technical skill to make this website a wonderful media source for our Federation. The only thing they need from us is our participation. Please send informative items from your home parishes in the form of the following:
- Articles - long, short and everything in between!
- Short blurbs
- Funny anecdotes.
Looking forward to reading and seeing about all your local choir happenings.
